My good friend, Liz, had a list of very cool stuff to do before she was 30. It went right down to the line, but I think she managed to do her 30th “thing” on the day of her 30th birthday!
I thought that her list was such a good idea that a few months ago I decided to make my own list. Some of the things are a bit ambitious, some not so much. I have never shared this with anyone; I was always a bit scared to, afraid of criticism or ridicule – but I watched Diana Nyad’s TED Talk recently and she paraphrased Teddy Roosevelt,
“It is not the critic who counts;
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;
who strives valiantly;
who errs and comes short again and again;
who knows great enthusiasms,
the great devotions;
who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement,
and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly
so that his place shall never be with those timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”
… and so, despite still worrying what people will think of it (and of me) I am sharing it anyway.
I still have a way to go to tick off everything on my list. I also only have 39 things on the list. It would be great to get ideas of what to have for number 40… Please help me finish the list!!
… and if any kind soul would help me to tick of some of the not-so-straightforward ones, that would be absolutely marvellous!
